Hyperglycemia – High Blood Sugar
Question: What is Hyperglycemia? What are the symptoms? Any
treatments?
Answer: Hyperglycemia occurs when
the body does not make enough insulin, or when the body cannot use insulin
properly. Eating too much, exercising too little, skipping a dose of diabetes
medication, or taking other medications that affect blood glucose (blood sugar)
can all cause hyperglycemia. For this reason, you should discuss all
medications with your doctor before you begin taking them. Infection, illness
and stress can also increase your blood glucose.
High blood glucose
can cause increased thirst and hunger as well as frequent urination. These
usually occur when your blood glucose is over 250 mg/dl. When blood glucose is
very high, you may also get sick to your stomach, vomit or faint. Dehydration
is also common with hyperglycemia, so be sure to drink plenty of water when
your glucose is high.
Two or more high
blood glucose readings in one day may signal the need for extra insulin, an
addition of oral medication or a change to your diet or exercise. If your blood
glucose is abnormally high two times in a row, call your doctor for advice.
