WELCOME TO GOOD HEALTH NEWS
This month we resume publication of our quarterly health newsletter, Good Health News. Each issue of Good Health News is packed with important and exciting medical information that is designed to "get you healthy and keep you healthy!"
For more than twenty years we worked with other docs treating "Sickness". Starting with this issue of Good Health News, we will shift our focus to managing "Wellness". Our goal is to prevent you from getting sick, by providing you with Health Information, Health Products and Health Services that will allow you to live a long and healthy life.
DR. LAYNE'S CORNER - News
you can use:
Welcome back. As most of you know, I recently took some time off to enjoy the family, to work on our web site and to re-format our newsletter. I have missed you all, and have missed the many great conversations that we have had over the years.
The exciting news is that soon we will be able to chat with each other in our "on-line" "chat rooms" at this web site, and now at the E-mail link above or by Fax (+1-404 681-2295). Our goal is to help YOU feel better, look better and live longer. Here are some tips to help you enjoy your summer: (Dr. Layne & staff)
Enjoy your Summer Picnics: Protect food from harmful bacteria
The foods most likely to harbor harmful bacteria at your summer picnic are Cold Cuts, Smoked Fish, Soft Cheese and any food made with Mayonnaise. Keep these foods very cold at all times until you eat them.
Vacations may protect you from Heart Attacks
Maybe the Europeans are smarter! A recent study of men at high risk for heart attacks confirmed that the more vacations they took, the less likely they were to die of heart disease. Maybe we should try that in America
Protect Your Vision: Eat your Carrots & Spinach:
Steamed Carrots have more beta-carotene than raw carrots. Be sure to eat your carrots to protect your vision.
You should also eat your Spinach to prevent loss of vision from "Macular degeneration" as you age
Men: Eat Cooked Tomatoes and protect your Prostate:
The red pigment in cooked tomatoes contains leukopenes, substances that may protect your prostate against cancer. Why take chances with this important gland?
Crohn's Disease linked to low intake of Magnesium and Potassium
A recent Canadian study suggested that the severity of Crohn's Disease might be linked to low levels of certain micronutrients, especially Potassium and Magnesium. Be sure to eat your veggies and to take a high quality nutritional supplement every day.

What to Eat:
- Eat Natural
Foods.
Eat natural foods
including lots of fruits, vegetables, salads, etc. Reduce your intake of
refined and highly processed foods (box cereals, cakes, cookies, etc.)
|
- Avoid Refined Foods. Reduce your intake of meals which contain a high content of white rice, white sugar, white flour, and processed white potato flour (as compressed potato chips, etc.) (Eat brown or wild rice, honey or natural cane sugar, whole-wheat flour and the natural potato instead).
- Avoid carbonated sodas. These speed up the loss of Calcium from your bones. Osteoporosis, or thinning of the bones secondary to loss of Calcium is a major cause of disability in elderly women and the problem often begins in the teenage years. This is especially important in women and teenage girls.
- Drink 8 glasses water every day. Use filtered water if you can and drink more if you can. Many of the problems associated with “illness” are made worse by dehydration.
- Force yourself to exercise every
day. Walk for 20 minutes every day, or exercise vigorously for 15 minutes every day. You can learn to build exercise into your normal daily routine if you follow the tips given in Good Health News and on our web site.
- Take a high quality daily
Multivitamin. Supplement your diet with a high quality complete
Nutritional Supplement. See section under “Vitamins & Nutritional
Supplements” for suggestions.

Control your weight and live longer:
 |
More than 61%
of the US population
is overweight, so you are in good company.
If you want to live a long and
healthy life, you will have to follow our suggestions for losing some of
your excess weight.
Eat your way to a Gorgeous
Figure
:
You don’t have to starve yourself to lose weight and have a great figure.
Well, what do you have to do? Learning WHAT to eat and HOW to eat are two
keys to successful weight
management! |
What to eat:
Eat high quality
protein – this will allow your body to burn it’s own fat.
There are healthy ways to do this, even if you are a vegetarian. Dr.
Layne will be happy show you how to do this. Eat only natural and complex
carbohydrates and not synthetic food (fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, whole
grains).
Reduce your intake of sugars, starches and highly
processed foods that
we are all programmed to eat. These are usually made up of
fats and carbohydrates.
Take a high quality Nutritional supplement every
day: A high quality nutritional supplement will guarantee that you are getting
your essential vitamins and minerals.
Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water per day or other
fluid that is free of calories, caffeine, dyes and carbonation.
How to Eat
Eat 5 small snacks per day :
If you want to develop a great body and
keep it, you must get out of the habit of eating 3 big meals per day. Learn to eat 5 small snacks per day instead. Big meals produce severe stress on your heart and on
your digestive glands (pancreas, liver, etc.)
In the next issue of Good Health News, Dr. Layne
outlines a tasty but healthy approach to rapidly losing your first 10 to 12
pounds of weight.
Do I need to Exercise?
Yes, you need exercise – but you don’t have to ‘pump iron’ at a gym every
night in order to have a well-toned body. Let’s begin by showing you how you
can build exercise into your daily routine, so you don’t even have to
think about it.
Walking is one of the greatest – and easiest -
forms of exercise! Walk with a friend in the mall after work and avoid the
traffic headaches. Walk at lunch when it is safe.
You can eat you protein bars and avoid the junk foods that your girlfriends are eating. Remember
to drink lots of clean water.
The Secret to Walking:
You can double the value of your exercise, if you take a deep breath, tuck in your tummy
and straighten your back while you are walking.
Exercises for Working Women
So you work all day in an office building, but you want to have a well-toned body!
No problem: If your building has more than one floor, you can develop a great body by simply walking up and down two flights of stairs (20+ steps) four or more
times during the day, instead of taking the elevator.
The Secret to walking also works with stairs: You can double the value of your exercise
if you take a deep breath, tuck in your tummy and straighten
your back while you
are walking up and down the steps!
Do your 200 stair-steps a day: Doing 200 steps a day is a great – and cheap - way to
exercise and you should be proud of yourself if you learn to do this!
 |
EXERCISES FOR STAY AT HOME MOMS:
So you work out of your home all day and
want to have a great body! No problem: You can get the same great exercise at home by going up
and down the steps to your basement. You can count the steps going down the stairs as well as the ones going up. The important thing is to double your exercise by remembering to take a deep breath, tuck in your tummy and straighten
your back. |
Follow the guidelines for sensible eating and exercise which are outlined in this and
subsequent copies of “Good Health News”, you will be well on your way to
maintaining good health and to developing a gorgeous figure. Look at yourself in
the mirror now and see how great you already look! Imagine yourself 10 or 20
pounds lighter! Exciting!
YOUR SEXUAL HEALTH - FOR
MEN:
Secrets for Men: You can keep yourself sexually active, regardless of your age. As a macho male, you hate to go to the doctor! We all know do! But deep inside, you wish you had the sexual energy of a 21year old. Well, you are in luck. In most cases, modern medicine can now help you to restore your sexual energy. First, let’s cover the basics:
Prostate infections and early prostate overgrowth are common causes of decreased sex drive. Your
doctor can test you for both of these conditions and can also run a blood screen on you to detect early prostate cancer. Excess Anxiety, Fatigue and Mental Stress: If you carry these emotions to bed, you will not be able to enjoy sex, regardless of your age. Discuss these problems with your doctor and have them treated as quickly as possible
Medications: Certain prescription medicines that are used to treat High Blood Pressure and Depression can markedly decrease your sex drive. You should check with your doctor to see if any of your medications may be reducing your sex drive.
Low levels of Male Sex Hormones are common causes of decreased sex drive in men over age fifty. In most cases, your doctor can now help you restore your male sex hormone levels to normal and markedly increase your sex drive.
What you can do to protect
yourself:
Get a Prostate-Screening exam performed by your doctor and a blood check of your PSA
(Prostate Specific Antigen) level.
Take Nutritional supplements: Nutrititonal supplements are now available that can help
you maintain your prostate health and your sex drive.
Eat lots of cooked tomatoes. The red pigment in cooked
tomatoes contains substances that help to protect your prostate health.
YOUR SEXUAL HEALTH - FOR WOMEN
Low sex
hormone levels, Anemia, low Thyroid hormone levels, infections, stress and
medications used to treat Hypertension and Depression are also common causes of
decreased sex drive in women. Fortunately, help is also now available for women.
Some of the same approaches discussed above (for men) are now being used to
successfully treat decreased sex drive in Women. Your doctor will be happy to
discus your specific problem with you in private. If you have a decreased sex
drive, you should discus with your doctor factors that may contribute to your
problem. These include:
- Imbalance in your Hormonal levels if you are pre-menopausal.
- Imbalance in your Hormonal levels if you are post-menopausal.
- Medications you are taking that may be decreasing your sex drive.
- Excess Anxiety, Fatigue or Mental stress. These definitely decrease your sex drive. Get
help quickly in managing these problems.
